Spelz: Die westgerm. Bezeichnung der Weizenart (mhd. spelte, spelze, ahd. spelta, spelza, niederl. spelt, ‹a›engl. spelt) gehört wohl zu der unter ↑ spalten behandelten Wortgruppe. Sie würde sich dann darauf beziehen, dass die Ähren beim Dreschen in einzelne Teile zerfallen (deren Körner in ihren Hülsen bleiben). Wie bei anderen Getreidebezeichnungen (z. B. »Korn«) wäre dann der Name der Frucht auf die ganze Pflanze übertragen worden.
Gleichbed. spätlat. spelta (Anfang des 4. Jh.s; daher it. spelta, frz. épeautre »Spelt«) ist wahrscheinlich ein Lehnwort aus westgerm. Sprachen, hat aber seinerseits die Erhaltung der unverschobenen Form »Spelt« im Hochd. bewirkt. In ihrem südwestdeutschen und schweizerischen Anbaugebiet heißt die Weizenart meist ↑ Dinkel. Dasselbe Wort ist Spelze »Getreidehülse; Hüllblatt der Gräserblüten« (im 17. Jh. Speltz, Spälze; der Spelt ergab sehr viel Dreschabfall).
